Reindeer Oreo Pops!

Reindeer Oreo Pops!!!
These chocolate covered Oreos are so full of holiday cheer!  Wrap them in little cello bags for a quick and fun Holiday gift!

I confess.  I am addicted to making Oreo pops.  I can’t stop.  They are so easy and fun.  They give me an excuse to buy a package of my favorite cookies.  They make people smile.

I have the art of “stick-placing” and “dipping” Oreos to coat them in chocolate down.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 package of Double Stuff Oreos
  • 2 bags (12oz each) of milk chocolate candy melts (I use Wilton’s)
  • 24 lollipop sticks
  • 1 small bag of mini-pretzels
  • Candy eyes
  • Mini M&Ms

DIRECTIONS:

  • Gently twist apart Oreos.  Some will break.  No stress.  Eat them.
  • Break apart pretzels by using a sharp knife to carefully cut them top to bottom through the center.  Then cut the round tops off, leaving a “Y” shape.
  • Put eyes and red mini M&Ms into small bowls, ready to use.
  • Place candy melts into a bowl.
  • Melt candy melts in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between, until completely melted and smooth.
  • Press a lollipop stick into white filling, making an indentation.
  • Dip stick into melted chocolate and spread chocolate on top of white filling.
  • Place stick into indentation and set top of cookie back on, cementing the cookie back together around the stick.
  • Allow chocolate to harden.  If you set cookies on a large plate as you put them together, you can place the entire plate into the fridge to speed the hardening process up.
  • Once hardened, pick the cookie up using the lollipop stick and set into melted chocolate.
  • Spoon melted chocolate over the Oreo to coat it.
  • Gently tap the stick on the bowl’s edge to allow excess chocolate to drip off.
  • Slide bottom of cookie along edge of bowl to remove excess chocolate.
  • Set cookie on parchment or waxed paper.
  • Put pretzel “antlers” into the top of the Oreo, and set two eyes and a nose on the front of the Oreo.
  • Allow chocolate to harden completely.
  • Serve as-is, or tie up in cello treat bags to give as gifts!

My thoughts:  What to do you get when you combine an Oreo with melted chocolate and salty pretzels?  Deliciousness!!!!!!  Use them as place settings on each plate for Christmas! Make reindeer, snowmen and red/green sprinkle Oreo pops and create a bouquet of pops in a cute Christmas planter for your Christmas celebration!  Use them as stocking stuffers or teacher gifts….the possibilities are endlessly fun!  Enjoy!  ~r

Lady Bug Oreo Pops!!

What could be better than a cute ladybug cookie on a stick?  Biting in and finding an OREO!!!!!

These cookies are such a fun treat!  Perfect as favors and prizes at parties- they just make you smile.

We’ve done lots of Oreo Pops here at Easybaked.  The technique is the same for these as for our Original Oreo pops.  To see the how-to photos and technique, click here.

Here’s what you will need for about 24 Oreo Pops.

INGREDIENTS:

  • One box of Double Stuff Oreos
  • One 12 oz. bag of Wiltons candy melts in yellow
  • One 12 oz. bag of Wiltons candy melts in red
  • One 12 oz. bag of Wiltons candy melts in dark chocolate.
  • One bag of mini M&Ms.
  • 24 lollipop sticks
  • Candy Eyes (if desired)

DIRECTIONS:

  • Carefully twist apart all of the Oreo cookies.
  • Using one of the pop sticks, make an indentation in the white filling of each cookie.
  • Melt the red Candy Melts in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
  • Dip the end of one stick into the melted candy melts, drizzle a little in the center of the white cookie filling and then gently press it into the indentation made.
  • Place the top of the cookie back on and allow white chocolate to harden (5 minutes or so), cementing the cookie back together with a stick inside.
  • Holding the stick, lower the entire Oreo into the bowl of melted red chocolate, spooning it over the top and sides to cover it completely.
  • Allow the excess chocolate to drain off and gently place covered Oreo on a piece of parchment paper to harden.  
  • Add two brown mini M&Ms to each half of the pop (use the photos as a guide– leave room for the top to be dipped in chocolate and for a line to be drawn down the middle.)
  • Dip half of the pops in the red chocolate and then melt the yellow chocolate and repeat the process with the 2nd half of the pops.
  • When candy melts have completely hardened, melt a the dark chocolate melts.  
  • Use a spoon to gently scoop chocolate over the top tip of the cookie, making a head on your ladybug.
  • Set each pop on parchment paper and add candy eyes (if desired) before chocolate hardens.  
  • After dipping the tops of all pops, and placing eyes, spoon remaining chocolate into a small ziptop bag and clip a corner.
  • Pipe a line from the head of the ladybug across the top toward the stick.  (use photos as a guide).
  • Allow pops to harden completely.
  • Enjoy!!!

My thoughts:  I’m addicted to Oreos.  I keep making Oreos into pops because it gives me an excuse to eat the extra Oreos that break.  

True confession.  

The other reason: they make people smile.  It never fails, you hand one of these crazy fun pops to anyone and they smile.  Even if they can’t or won’t eat dessert….they smile.  These pops are like puppies.  They make people happy!  Every few months I feel an overwhelming urge to make a different variety to share with you….so I hope that you enjoy them– and that you smile 🙂  ~r

DIY Caramel Corn and other great gift ideas from Easybaked!

I love making and getting creative edible gifts. I’m not talking just a plate of Christmas cookies here…I’m talking unique and different.  Take Caramel Corn, for example.  It is my grandmother’s favorite and I remember spending long evenings watching my parents try various caramel corn recipes in search of the perfect (yet not too messy!) one.  There was the giant brown sack method (where you shake the caramel in) and the cookie sheet one where you pour the caramel on and try to mix it on the sheet (my dog liked that method– lots of popcorn on the floor!)

A few years ago a friend handed me an adorable little Christmas package with mysterious items inside (all tied up with a cute tag and bow) and when I opened it I found ingredients for caramel corn.  All I needed was butter….. I promptly made it and YUM!!!  Quick, easy, delicious and SUCH a creative gift.  This post is dedicated to the recipes you can use this Christmas to make creative and memorable gifts for your friends and families.

CARAMEL CORN:

  • Place  1/2c. packed brown sugar in a small bag and zip or tie it tightly.
  • Place 8 large marshmallows in a small bag and zip or tie it tightly.
  • Place both of the above ingredients in a larger bag or gift box with one packet of microwave popcorn.


Close the bag or box with the following directions:

  • Pop corn in microwave according to package
  • Place brown sugar, marshmallows and 1/2 stick (4T) butter into a 2 qt. bowl
  • Microwave for 3 minutes, stirring well at 1 and 1/2 minutes.  Syrup should be smooth and bubbly.
  • Pour over popped corn and enjoy!

OREO POPS:

HOT CHOCOLATE POPS:

I made these as gifts for SO many people last year.  I made extra for myself.  These are so easy and SO delicious~ everyone will LOVE them.  What are they?  Chocolate (in a variety of flavors and colors) hardened over a marshmallow on a stick.  You stir them into hot milk and make the most creamy, delicious hot chocolate ever.  The best part?  You can make them WAY ahead.  I made some in December and used them in March…still wonderful.  The recipe and directions can be found by clicking HERE.  If you want to print some free tags to tie on your pops click on the image below:

Mummy Oreo Pops for Halloween!!

These make me smile– aren’t they cute?  I saw the idea on a regular cookie at Mel’s Kitchen Cafe (along with a really cute mummy hot dog idea!) and I immediately thought of my Oreo pops recipe from last spring and decided to turn some Oreos into mummies!  It was a little time consuming, but not difficult.  I think the results were worth the effort!  Here’s how we did it:

INGREDIENTS:

DIRECTIONS:

  • Carefully twist apart all of the Oreo cookies.
  • Using one of the pop sticks, make an indentation in the white filling of each cookie.
  • Melt the Candy Melts in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring until completely melted and smooth.
  • Dip the end of one stick into the melted white chocolate, drizzle a little in the center of the white cookie filling and then gently press it into the indentation made.
  • Place the top of the cookie back on and allow white chocolate to harden (5 minutes or so), cementing the cookie back together with a stick inside.

  • Before dipping the entire cookie, unwrap your fondant, split it in half and immediately place one half in an air-tight zip-top bag (you will only use half of the fondant).
  • Roll the remaining  fondant out with a rolling pin as directed on the box.  Using a sharp knife, cut strips (about as wide as an oreo) in the fondant and then cut narrow strips across (see photo)

  • Now it is time to dip your Oreo pops (you may need to put your candy melts back in the microwave for a few seconds to remelt them)
  • Holding the stick, lower the entire Oreo into the bowl of melted white chocolate, spooning it over the top and sides to cover it completely.
  • Allow the excess chocolate to drain off and gently place covered Oreo on a piece of parchment paper to harden. 
  • Immediately place two eyes on the front and gently lay strips of fondant back and forth across the cookie.  It took me a little bit to figure out a pattern that looked good and worked– copy mine if you want!!
  • Allow everything to harden and place in treat bags with ties.

My thoughts:  These are a little time-consuming, but if you enjoy the process  (I do!) and you have a free afternoon (I did!) these are just really fun to put together.  The smiles when people see them make all that work worthwhile!  Enjoy!  ~r

That last picture is intended to make you feel better about breaking a few cookies in the process.  I believe the Oreo package contains 30 cookies and I made 23 pops….7 “failures”.  The hardest part is simply twisting the cookies apart without the top cracking.  Just be gentle 🙂

DIRECTIONS (continued):

  • Holding the stick, lower the entire Oreo into the bowl of melted white chocolate, spooning it over the top and sides to cover it completely.
  • Allow the excess chocolate to drain off and gently place covered Oreo on a piece of parchment paper to harden.  
  • Top with confetti sprinkles immediately before the chocolate hardens.
  • Eat and enjoy!!!


My thoughts: I love Oreos so much that it hurts….and I am on a diet…and there were SEVEN broken cookies.  Sigh.  I just closed my eyes and *smelled* them…who knew Oreos smelled so good??!!  These pops were wrapped up in cute bags and given as Valentines treats– they are MUCH easier to dip than cake pops, which made me happy.  I hope you have a fun occasion coming up and get and chance to try these!   -r

4-28-12:  Just made these for a couple of bridal showers and put them into “bouquets”- SO fun and really easy.  Just make the pops, tie them up in little treat bags with tags (free pdf for the “i do” ones I used : Oreo Pop Leaf Tags) and poke them into floral foam in a cute container.

Red Velvet Cake Balls- filled with Cream Cheese Frosting!

Surprise!!!  These red velvet cake balls are filled with cream cheese frosting!  A fun treat for birthdays, holidays, showers….it is all in the decorating!

INGREDIENTS:

  • One red velvet cake mix (with oil, water and eggs to make according to box)
  • One tub of ready-made cheesecake frosting.
  • 2 (12 oz.) bags of Wilton White Candy Melts
  • Sprinkles or dark chocolate candy melts to use for decorating.

DIRECTIONS:

  • Bake cake mix according to package and cool
  • While cake is baking/cooling- spoon 1/2 of the tub of frosting into a ziptop bag.  Clip a corner and pipe dime-size dollops of frosting onto a cookie sheet covered in parchment paper (pipe about 35-40) Place in freezer.

  • Cut cooled cake into pieces and chop into fine crumbs using a food processor or food chopper.
  • Mix cake crumbs with remaining frosting until it can be formed into balls that hold together (you may not need all the frosting).
  • Roll about one tablespoon of cake into a ball, press it flat and put a frozen frosting bit in the center.  Wrap cake dough around frosting and smooth into a ball. (try to keep the frosting bits frozen- I did only 5 at a time and kept the rest in the freezer.  The frosting will not freeze hard- it will be more like taffy when you peel it from the parchment paper).

  • Refrigerate cake balls for a few hours.
  • Melt Candy Melts in microwave in 30 second increments until smooth.
  • Dip cold cake balls into white chocolate candy melts (this is the hardest part for me….I made a huge mess trying different techniques and finally settled on a fork, tapping it against the edge of the bowl until excess has drained away.  Some people use toothpicks or spoons or special dipping tools….I think this part is just a mess for me no matter how I do it!)
  • Place dipped cake balls on parchment paper to harden.  If you are decorating with sprinkles, do this before the chocolate hardens.  Otherwise, just drizzle with some dark chocolate for a more elegant look:

My thoughts: These are SO good.  The frosting in the middle is a fun surprise and it adds a yummy creaminess to the cake balls.  Hassle?  Yes.  I am convinced that cake balls and cake pops are not my gifting– so many people make them look effortless and that is NOT the case for me!  I love the taste though….so once in awhile….ENJOY!!!

My First Attempt at Cake Pops :)

It’s Memorial Day.  I have extra down time and I start thinking about cake pops– they are all the rage these days…I look up some info by googling “What are Cake Pops?” and get literally hundreds of recipes for these little treats.  Cake + Frosting= balls of happiness.  Add a stick and cover them in chocolate–CAKE POPS!  So I decided to give them a try…..

INGREDIENTS:

(we went with only things I already had in the house, but these flavors were really yummy!)

  • 1 box of yellow cake mix (and water, oil and eggs to make according to package)
  • 1/2 tub of Wiltons decorating frosting
  • 1 bag of Wilton Dark Candy Cocoa Melts
  • Small amounts of Wilton colored candy melts to decorate with
  • 24 Lollipop sticks

DIRECTIONS:

  • Make cake according to directions and cool.
  • Cut cake into small pieces and scoop into a large mixing bowl.
  • Using a hand mixer, blend cake into crumbs.

  • Add frosting and mix with mixer until combined.
  • Using hands, knead cake and frosting into a dough-like consistency
  • Use a cookie scoop to measure out scoops of dough.  Roll into balls with hands.

  • Melt dark chocolate candy melts in the microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between.
  • Dip the end of a sucker stick into the chocolate and press into the top of each ball of dough.  Allow this chocolate to harden.

  • Dip entire ball of dough into remaining chocolate- covering completely.  Set upright by putting end of stick in a block of styrofoam (or I used a shoebox that I poked holes into!)

  • Melt colored candy melts in the same manner as you melted the dark chocolate ones and drizzle over the top .

  • Allow chocolate to harden completely and serve!
    My thoughts:  What a glorious mess this made. wow.  In almost every answer on “how to make cake pops” I read something along the lines of- these take practice…don’t expect your first batch to be beautiful etc…and I disregarded this thinking that I’ve dipped almost everything I own in chocolate- how hard could this be???  
    The cake part is easy.  Making crumbs- easy. Mixing in frosting and making balls- easy.  Sticks- easy.  Dipping these?   CRAZY messy!   After my 1st five pops were dipped I decided that I was never doing this again.  By pop #15 I was thinking I might do this again- but not for 20 years.  I dropped pop #22 on the ground and had to eat it (well I couldn’t serve it could I??)
    One bite in and  I decide I am making these for EVERYTHING!!!!  I’d never tasted one of these and I am blown away- no wonder everyone is going through the hassle!
    Advice:
    1.  Don’t wear your favorite white shirt while making these. 😦
    2. Eat these over a plate so that when they fall apart you don’t have to wonder how clean the floor is.
    3. These take practice- don’t expect your 1st batch to be beautiful- lol 🙂
